Towards a Brain Compatible Theory of Syntax Based on Local Testability
نویسندگان
چکیده
Chomsky’s theory of syntax came after criticism of probabilistic associative models of word order in sentences. Immediate constituent structures are plausible but their description by generative grammars has met with difficulties. The type 2 (context-free) grammars account for constituent structure, but already trespass the mathematical capacity required by language, because they generate unnatural mathematical sets: a consequence of being based on recursive function theory. Abstract associative models investigated by formal language theoreticians (Schutzenberger, McNaughton, Papert, Brzozowsky, Simon) are known as locally testable models. A combination of locally testable and constituent structure models is proposed under the name of Associative Language Description, arguing that it equals type 2 grammars in explanatory adequacy, yet is compatible with brain models. Two versions of ALD are exemplified and discussed: one based on modulation, the other on pattern rules. A sketch of brain organization in terms of cell assemblies and synfire chains concludes.

Syntactic Development of Right-Brain and Left-Brain Dominant Iranian EFL Learners: Processability Theory in Perspective
Processability Theory, a component of the cognitive approach to second language acquisition tries to enhance understanding of how the interlanguage knowledge systems can be restructured by second language learners (Pienemann, 1998, 2015). The present study intended to run a similar investigation into the syntactic development of Right-Brain and Left-Brain Dominant Iranian EFL learners based on ...
متن کاملSocial Logic of Cities and Urban Tourism Accessibility; Space Syntax Analysis of Kuala Lumpur City Centre
Tourism is a progressively major part of economies of urban areas. Urban regeneration as a subcategory of urban tourism has been the center of many urban projects. This study addresses the role of space syntax theory as an analytical tool and design aided tool in urban regeneration. For this purpose, we examined the development of a square in the Kuala Lumpur City Center (KLCC) using space synt...

Determinants of Completing the Medication Reconciliation Form Among Nurses Based on Diffusion of Innovation Theory
Background &Objectives:Patientsafety is a global medical concern with remarkable influence onthe health of patients. Studies have suggested thattreatment-related damages occur in approximately 10% of patients at variable degrees, and more than a quarter of these damages are associated with medication errors. Medication errors could be diminished during patient hospitalization and transferusing ...
متن کاملAnalysis of residential complexes with the approach of space syntax in terms of mass crime (Case Study: Shiraz Residential complexes)
Various factors affect the degree of mass crime of an environment, including social, economic, and physical factors. The purpose of this research is to investigate the role of the physical components of an environment on mass crime rate. In this regard, open spaces between residential complexes were selected as the case studies and based on five outdoor patterns including linear pattern, disper...
